Although there is no definite timeline for this, the eventual goal is to have all students live on campus for all four years of their education. St. Norbert College is considered a residential college which means that all students must live on campus unless they request otherwise. While commuters may live at home, they must also request off-campus housing if they choose to move out.
Currently 175 seniors and 305 juniors live on campus. The goal is to get more seniors to live on campus next year. With the building of the new residential hall, Cindi Barnett, assistant dean of campus life, says that she hopes to make living on campus more attractive to upperclassmen. "[My] hope is to minimize frustration and anger," says Barnett of creating appealing living arrangements.
Some other tentative plans for campus housing improvements include expanding on living and learning communities. This would include honors housing, multicultural floors, and academic focused housing where students with similar majors would have the option of living together.
One of the benefits of living on campus is that students' financial aid packages are larger. Proximity is also a benefit of choosing on-campus housing. "Students learn things about goal setting, students learn things about communication," says Barnett of living on campus. "A lot of these same skills are life skills."
Although there are several benefits of living on campus, the independence and life experience that comes with living on your own is not as prominent. To help minimize disadvantages like these, the new residential hall will have a 12-month lease available.
While four year, on-campus residency is an eventual goal, off-campus housing remains available for now.
