With graduation right around the corner, I can't help but be overwhelmed with the idea of entering the real world. With three weeks left of school, I am uncertain of my future, but I am confident that the experiences I've had and the hard work I've put in over the past four years will pay off.
At the conclusion of spring semester, I will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and a minor in Business Administration. With this experience, I plan on entering into a position of sales, marketing or management. Throughout the past 22 years of my life, I (just like many of you) have prepared for this new chapter in life. Throughout my four years at St. Norbert, I have participated in several activities, jobs and internships that have helped me prepare for life after graduation.
In January 2009, I began the job search, which was initially exciting. However, the inevitable reality would soon set in, and the idea of finding the perfect job seemed just out of reach. After meeting with Career Services (which I would recommend doing as early as your freshman or sophomore year), I revised my resume and developed several cover letters. I began searching for jobs and throwing my resume on several online job finders (i.e. Career Builder and Monster). I also attended job fairs and networked, both of which were very helpful. Eventually I began hearing back from several corporations/businesses, many of which I interviewed with.
So far, six different companies have interviewed me for various positions, including insurance sales, financial agent and marketing positions. Although I have been offered jobs, many of these positions are in the Green Bay and Appleton areas, and I have always envisioned moving to a larger city such as Chicago or San Diego. When I graduate, I want to be able to experience new things in a new place; I see myself in a bigger city where valuable opportunities are often tough to come by.
So the job search continues and uncertainty looms largely, but I am confident that with my education and experience, I'll have no problem adjusting to the real world.
