This is my second year employed with St. Norbert College as the assistant director of internships, which continues to be a fulfilling and exciting position while still providing challenges to keep me on my toes. There are two things I really enjoy about my job: the students and the variety. Each student I work with has a unique story, and assisting them in discovering where this story will go is very intriguing. Internships are a great way to test their story and discover their likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, all while gaining the skills necessary for the world of work.
The variety of work I do keeps me very engaged and focused on the bigger picture of my professional goals. On a day to day basis, I will meet with students for one-on-one career counseling sessions which can range from internship, job or graduate school searching; assisting with application materials or interview prep; and accommodating the undecided student who is seeking assistance on choosing a major and discovering their interests, goals, values and preferred personality styles. In addition, I am in constant contact with employers who are interested in recruiting SNC student interns. A large portion of my time is spent managing the college's internship program. In any given semester, I might do upwards of 30 internship site visits, in which I drive to companies hosting SNC interns to meet with the supervisor and student intern.
In addition to my role in the career services office, this past year I have been instructing the internship course for the division of humanities and fine arts. This has been extremely rewarding. I truly enjoy assisting students through a semester long process of integrating practical work experiences with reflective and academic components to help them develop personally, professionally and intellectually.
My free time is spent fishing, enjoying the outdoors and spending time with family and friends, usually playing a lot of Sheepshead (a card game). My husband and I built a home on five acres of land near Shiocton and moved in last September. This spring will be consumed by landscaping and putting in a lawn. I graduated from Ripon College with a double major in sociology and business administration and then pursued a masters degree in counseling and student personnel psychology from the University of Minn.-Twin Cities. Life is a journey that doesn't end, and I am passionate about helping students through a fraction of that journey with the goal of having a lasting effect.
