On April 15, 2009, Sara Coursin '12 was announced as a finalist in the Church Hill Classics "Frame My Future" Scholarship Contest. Coursin, who is from Pewaukee, WI, submitted a collage that illustrates her dream of being a dentist.
After encouragement from her parents to apply for scholarships, Coursin discovered this particular contest on scholarships.com. On a whim, she created and submitted an entry. Coursin was shocked to find out that she was one of the twenty-four finalists.
Students from every state in America submitted over 3,300 entries. Of those 3,300 entries, only 24 were selected as Finalists.
Though Coursin wishes she could have spent more time putting together her submission, she is thrilled to have gotten this far in the contest.
Finalists were selected by judges, and will be narrowed down by public vote. Five $1,000 awards will be awarded to the five top-voted entries, and the top vote-getter will receive $1,000 to donate to their college or university's scholarship endowment fund.
Coursin is encouraging people to vote for her entry with a Facebook group, by tweeting about her submission on Twitter and by word of mouth through her friends and family. Additionally, the local newspaper in Pewaukee featured an article on Coursin.
Coursin, who graduated from Pewaukee High School, is currently a biology major. After graduation from St. Norbert in 2012, she hopes to attend Marquette University for dental school.
The "Frame My Future" scholarship contest required students to submit a "creation" on a piece of paper that illustrates what they want to achieve in their lives after college. Submissions included photographs, essays, collages, and other artistic pieces. The entry needed to communicate: This is how I "Frame My Future." Though Coursin's submission is a collage, she describes art as just a "hobby."
In the press release from Church Hill Classics, Lucie Voves, owner of Church Hill Classics shares, "We hit a nerve with kids across the country who invested hours of work and abundant creativity to complete their amazing vision of their own future. As a company, we are proud to be giving back in our own way, and I hope that we can motivate other small businesses to give a little, because the result can be a great deal gained. These amazing young people are an inspiration. By creating visions for themselves, they are laying a thoughtful path for their own success and future contributions to our society. In a time when much of what you read and hear is discouraging, my hope is that you too will be inspired by the remarkable entries."
All 24 "Frame My Future" finalist entries can be found and voted for on the Church Hill Classics website, http://www.diplomaframe.com. Students can vote for Coursin's entry online through May 15. The top five vote-getters will be announced at the end of May.
