As the track season comes to a close, the athletes begin preparing for both the conference and national finals. Ashley Graybill '09 and Jenny Scherer '10 are two athletes who stand out this season. Both Graybill and Scherer posses several SNC Indoor and Outdoor records and are both looking forward to potentially representing SNC at the Division III Outdoor Championships. Graybill has already qualified for nationals in both the 800-meter and 400-meter and is hoping to qualify for the 1500-meter at an upcoming event. Scherer, although not officially qualified for nationals, is very close to qualifying in both the 5000-meter and 10000-meter.
In the process of qualifying for nationals, Graybill broke the SNC Outdoor 800-meter record. At the Coastal Carolina event where Graybill broke the record, she competed against and defeated mainly Division I opponents. Graybill now owns 14 SNC Track and Field records after winning a Division I event, qualifying for nationals and breaking an SNC record all in one race.
"It was a great win, and it felt awesome to break the school record along the way. I am fortunate to have a coach that takes me to a good amount of Division I meets so that I can compete against tough competition. This helps me to be both mentally and physically tough in my races," Graybill said.
Although Scherer has not officially qualified for nationals, she is extremely close. Similar to Graybill, Scherer has set several SNC record times. Scherer holds SNC record times in both the 5000-meter and 10000-meter. Despite already owning the SNC record times in both events, Scherer is determined to lower those times in preparation for nationals.
"I am on the qualifying list for both the 5000 and 10000-meter runs, but I need to improve my time in both of these events in order to actually make it to nationals. My goal at the beginning of the season was to be an All-American in both the 5000 and 10000-meter
runs and at this point that is still what I'm shooting for."
The Division III Outdoor Championships will be held May 21-23 at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.
