December is a time full of the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, door busting at five in the morning, hanging up holiday lights and cherishing the time spent with family. The feeling of giving gifts to loved ones is indescribable, however, as full-time college students, we realize that money does not just fall from trees.
Buying gifts for everyone in our families seems a bit impractical. Callie Schroeder '12 stated, "I used a lot of gift cards to buy presents, so it was not actually my money I was spending. I also shopped for sales this year." Schroeder went on to say, "My friends and I always do Secret Santa every year which also cuts back on the spending."
Others however, chose to shop for gifts a bit differently. Scott Fitzgerald '12 admitted, "I bought everyone in my family a Christmas gift."
And yet, others had a different opinion when holiday shopping. Kellie Pexa '13 expressed, "I did cut down a little bit when it came to buying Christmas presents. I tried to find things on sale and only buy people one nice gift I knew they would really like." She went on to exclaim, "I worked three days over break which ended up being about twenty hours. It was nice to get some extra spending money over the holidays."
Yet, other students wish they would have used their time more productively over break. Miranda Zygiel '13 admitted, "I spent too much money when shopping for gifts and going to movies and out to eat with friends. I wish that during the long break I would've worked because now I feel like I don't have any money for going out on the weekends." She went on to say, "This semester I will try to be more aware of my spending and try to save some money."
With mixed thoughts about our spending during the holidays, many college students will consider the need to be more aware of their expenses. It's a new year, time for new changes!
